We had an amazing time at the Birthday/Fundraiser party at Burleson Yard Beer Garden!
So many wonderful people came out to celebrate not only Natasha's existence, but the beginning of the Sidestep film project journey. Many contributions were made, for which we are all so grateful!
To add to the fun, we held raffle drawing for awesome gifts donated by our friends from Lee's El Taco Garage, Lauren Mason Yoga, Boyd's of Texas, Leeway Tesla Service, Mind Over Matter Integrative Coaching, and Avocado Cafe & Juice Bar.
All of the fun and magic was captured by the wonderful Michele at 1836 Photographie. You can see them here and follow the link to purchase prints.
We can't wait for the next event to share with you all!
From Natasha Straley:
I am elated to announce the San Antonio Film Commission has awarded me a Local Filmmakers Grant to direct a proof-of-concept short film for my feature of the same name, SIDESTEP.
SIDESTEP is a story of a New York City gal who finds herself on a Texas dance floor. It is a dark and dry fish-out-of-water dramedy about healing through the arts within an unfamiliar environment.
I began writing SIDESTEP a year ago when I took a personal writer's retreat to the deserts of West Texas. The stillness and tranquility allowed me the space to finish writing a draft of my first feature film. Yes, the first draft was terrible. Like, the absolute worst. Real bad. But the bones were there and I'll never forget the feeling of holding the print in my hand for the first time. That was an accomplishment all its own.
I've spent the last year restructuring and revising (and avoiding revising) the draft and still have work to do before it is complete. So close!
When I was having trouble answering some problems I had created within the story, someone listening to my struggle advised (I'm so sorry, I can't remember who told me!) writing the short version of the story to see what remained after being boiled down. This simplistic and specific approach created the proof-of-concept short that will now be produced this summer in San Antonio, Texas. And it definitely took care of all of the looming problems in previous drafts. This short will be used to travel the festival circuit and shop for investors for the feature version.
Thanks to the SA Film Commission's generosity, we are well on our way to meeting the financial needs to produce this film. Interested in being a part of the project? Instead of crowd-funding for the remaining funds, we've decided to accept tax-deductible donations privately.
I have an incredible team around me and it is continuing to build. I cannot wait to announce their participation over the next few months. I truly believe you're only as strong as your team - and these folks make this project invincible.
We'll shed some light on the process of creating a short film in San Antonio as we move forward. Follow @sidestep_film on Instagram to see behind-the-scenes photos and videos. And you already know you'll hear from me on Twitter and FB <3
So. Freaking. Excited.
Endless gratitude to everyone who has supported this journey.
Thank you thank you thank you.
